Story Behind the Aja Ekadashi

In ancient times, a Chakravarti king named Harishchandra ruled. Due to some karma, he gave up all his kingdom and wealth. At the same time, he sold his wife, son and himself and started living life imbibing the truth as a slave of Chandala.

Thus many years passed for the king. One day, when the king was worried, Gautam Rishi came there. The king told them his problem. Then Gautam sage said that after seven days from today Ekadashi named Jaya will come in the Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month, you should fast on it lawfully. With the virtuous effect of that fast, all your sins will be destroyed.

On the arrival of Ekadashi, the king observed fasting and awakening. With the effect of that fast, all the sins of the king were destroyed. The horns started ringing from heaven and flowers started raining. Due to the effect of the fast, the deceased son of the king became alive and the kingdom was also reunited. In the end he went to heaven with his family.
