Activate Walmart Gift Card | Add Card to Your App

Most Walmart gift cards (especially those under $250 bought in-store) are automatically activated at the register when purchased. If you are trying to use a standard card and it isn’t working, it might just need to be added to your account, not “activated.”

However, if you have a card valued over $250, a card sent by mail, or a Walmart Visa card, you must follow specific activation steps.

1. Standard Walmart Gift Cards

(Cards usable only at Walmart and Sam’s Club)

  • Purchased In-Store (Under $250):

    • No activation required. The cashier activated it at the moment of purchase.

    • Test it: You can check the balance here or call 1-888-537-5503. If it has a balance, it is active.

  • Mailed to You / Valued Over $250:

    • For security, these are shipped inactive. You must use the instructions that came with the package.

    • Online: Go to walmart.com/activate. You will need the activation code sent in your email or printed on the package.

    • Phone: Call 1-800-411-7942.

  • E-Gift Cards (Emailed):

    • Click the distinct “Activate” link inside the email. If there is no link, the card is already live and you just need the Card Number and PIN to shop.

2. Walmart Visa Gift Cards

(Cards with a Visa logo, usable anywhere Visa is accepted)

These almost always require manual activation.

  • Website: Go to walmartgift.com (Note: This is a different site than regular Walmart cards).

  • Phone: Call the number on the back of your card (usually 1-866-633-9096).

  • Required Info: You will need the 16-digit card number, 3-digit security code (CVV), and expiration date.

  • Crucial Step: You must register your zip code on the website if you plan to use this card for online shopping, otherwise transactions will be declined.

3. How to Add the Card to Your App (“Redeem”)

If your card is active but you want to load the funds into your Walmart account for easy checkout:

  1. Open the Walmart App (or sign in at Walmart.com).

  2. Tap Account > Wallet.

  3. Tap Add New Payment Method (or “Add Gift Card”).

  4. Enter the 16-digit Card Number and the 4-digit PIN (scratch off the silver strip on the back).

  5. The balance is now saved to your account and will show up as a payment option at checkout.

Troubleshooting Tip: If your card says “Invalid” or “Not Active” but you just bought it in a store, check your receipt. If the receipt does not say “Activated” near the bottom, the cashier may have failed to scan it properly. You will need to return to the store with the receipt to fix this; phone support cannot activate a card that wasn’t scanned correctly at the register.
