And in her lower hands, she’s got the Abhaya and Vara Mudras done. The Mother Goddess is depicted here as if she were riding a bull. Mahagauri is the ruler of Shukla Paksha (the waxing phase of the Moon), so those who are afflicted by the planet’s negative influence pray to her.

Day 8: Mahagauri Maa

Folklore has it that in order for Goddess Parvati to marry Lord Shiva, she had to do penance. During this time, she was forced to endure many hardships, such as subsisting solely on leaves and spending time in the wilderness, and as a result of these circumstances, her skin darkened to a jet black colour. Then, when Lord Shiva finally agreed to take her in as his wife, he bathed her in Ganges water, which returned her skin tone to normal, making her fair again. As a result of this, she has earned the nickname Mahagauri.

You should perform the Panchopchara puja in order to pray to Maa Gauri and offer the following: Gandham, Pushp, Deepam, Sug and Naivedyam (bhog). Provide shringar-related goods and services (sindoor, mehendi, kajal, bindi, bangles, toe ring, comb, aalta, mirror, anklets, perfume, earrings, nose pin, necklace, red chunri, mahavar, hairpins etc).

Mata Mahagauri Aarti
