Recent reports indicate that approximately $4.7 trillion in US Treasury payments were “untraceable” due to missing identification codes. This information was brought to light by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), headed by Elon Musk.
The missing code is called the Treasury Account Symbol (TAS), which is crucial for linking payments to specific budget items. Without this code, it becomes extremely difficult to track where the money is going.
DOGE has since made the TAS field mandatory for all Treasury payments to improve transparency and accountability.
